Higher Diploma in Computing in Creative Multimedia Programming (Level 8)

Programme Description:		This programme is designed to address the ICT skills demand for Computer Software Engineers, as outlined in Appendix 5 of the HEA call for proposals document. Multimedia is the convergence and integration of various types of digital media, including images, sound, video, text, graphics and animations. The HDip in Creative Multimedia Programming responds to a growing skills shortage in industry for multimedia technologies, and in particular to support broadcast, entertainment, surveillance, gaming, internet, communications and consumer industries. The aim of this programme is to give the students an academically challenging educational experience that will enable them to develop their knowledge base, professional attitudes, project management skills and industry awareness to serve both the multimedia computing industry and society. The course also aims to provide the student with the opportunity to engage in independent research that integrates concepts, issues and ethical principles that allow the student to question existing precepts. This course also includes an Industrial Placement of 3 months
Aim:		The programme aims to: Provide a rigorous curriculum in the study areas applicable to Multimedia Computing and Design. Establish a thorough understanding of the scientific, technological and design processes in the creation of multimedia environments. Cultivate a practical understanding of the multimedia computing industry and of the management of multimedia project development, having regard to the importance of networking, team integration, knowledge management, and economic environment. Equip the student with the skills necessary for the management of information and its associated technologies. Enable the student to contribute to the multimedia development environment in a manner that sustains and enhances both the success and competitive ability of a multimedia business. Develop initiative, encourage an imaginative approach to the solution of problems and promote leadership qualities, as well as encouraging students to be productive team members and to communicate effectively.
Entry Requirements:		Applicants must satisfy the minimum entry requirement of a Level 8 degree, or equivalent, in a non-cognate area. Recognition of Prior Experiential Learning (RPL) will be granted based on relevant experience and training in accordance with LIT’s RPL policy.
Content:		The pace of delivery will be significantly faster than for normal undergraduate programmes to bring participants to an appropriate level in the proposed timeframe. Learners will engage in active learning through: Attendance on-site at LIT Lecturers Tutorials Practicals Lab-based lecturers Seminars Workshops Self-directed study a) Course materials originated by LIT will be made available to participants using the virtual learning environment, Moodle. Traditional materials such as textbooks will also be used. Online e-mentoring support using Moodle discussion groups, email, conference calls, instant messaging, etc. will be provided for participants and use of these will be encouraged in all parts of the programme. b) To facilitate the most effective delivery in terms of time, location and quality, a blended learning approach will be adopted to enable participants to benefit from the expertise of specialist staff and maintain regular frequent contact with learners. c) A feature of the course will be the involvement of guest speakers/presenters from industry to ensure the currency and relevance of content. This will be achieved through seminars, workshops and guest speakers. Classes/Labs take place at LIT. There is also a 3 month Industrial Placement
