Domestic Building Energy Ratings

Aim:		Having successfully completed this module, the student will be able to: 1. Explain the key objectives and the background to the Energy Performance of Building Directive (EPBD). 2. Demonstrate the ability to undertake limitation of CO2 emission calculations as required by the Building Regulations (Regulation L2(a)) and as outlined in the Technical Guidance Document to the Building Regulations Part L (May 2006 Edition). 3. Demonstrate the ability to accurately collect data on dwelling specifications and other characteristics that affect energy and CO2 emissions performance and input it into the DEAP software to produce BER Labels and Advisory Reports for new dwellings. 4. Use DEAP to check for conformance with TGD L 2008. 5. Produce BER Ratings and Advisory Reports for new dwellings. 6. Explain the significance, in BER terms, of varying the specifications for new dwellings.
Entry Requirements:		Learners should have attained a level 6 qualification in construction studies or a similar discipline or equivalent and should have a broad knowledge of the building and energy sector. Basic IT skills equivalent to the EDCL are a requirement for the programme. Numbers on the programme are limited so preference will be given to the applicants with the most relevant qualifications and/or experience. Candidates will be asked to provide proof of qualifications and experience. Note: To become a Registered Building Energy Assessor a number of criteria must be met and successfully completed (over 70%). An approved BER course is only the first step. The SEAI Domestic BER Examination must then be passed. The full criteria and other details are available at www.seai.ie/ber. There are already nearly 7000 certified BER Assessors in Ireland of whom less than 2200 had completed full registration with SEAI in April 2010. However, under the 2008 Building Regulation (TGD L), the simplest way to confirm that a new dwelling conforms to the energy requirements of the regulations is to evaluate it using DEAP so this course may also be of benefit to people in the construction and energy sectors who do not intend to become assessors.
Assessment:		The module has a programme of continuous assessment and a final written and practical exam. It is necessary to obtain greater than 70% in all elements to achieve an award in the module. The assessment criteria are as specified by SEAI.
Duration:		12 weeks. 1 night per week, Tuesday from 7:00pm – 10:00pm Commencing Tuesday 20th September 2011 (Semester 1) Commencing Tuesday 24th January 2012 (Semester 2)
