LIT Tipperary's GAA Club

The 2006/07 season has been the most successful in the history of LIT-Tipperary's GAA Club. And while the hurlers produced some great performances throughout the year, pride of place must go to both the men's and ladies football teams, who in combination with St. Patrick's College, Thurles succeeded in winning their respective championships for the very first time.

Corn na Mac Leinn

Unrivalled scenes of excitement engulfed 'The Dub' playing fields in Belfast in March when TI's Gaelic football team won the All-Ireland Colleges Corn na Mac Leinn Final. Played as part of the prestigious Sigerson Cup weekend and excellently hosted by Queen's University, this was a historic first in this code for the Tipperary College's side. With victories over Marino College in the quarter final and Mater Dei in the semi-final, the TI/St. Pat's side travelled north with high hopes for their final showdown with the Royal College of Surgeons. The sides were level at the end of normal time, and in the 20 minutes of extra time that followed the Tipperary Institute / St. Patrick's team came out on top on a scoreline of 1-7 to 0-8. The referee's final whistle was greeted with scenes of joy and excitement by the Tipperary contingent. When team captain Barry O'Regan lifted the Corn na Mac Leinn trophy, history was created, with a first ever Colleges football title for the Tipperary college. The singing and dancing that followed at the presentation rostrum was a celebration of one of the great GAA moments in the history of both Tipperary Institute and St. Patrick's College.

Donaghy Shield

Similarly, the ladies Gaelic football team also produced some outstanding performances throughout the year to reach the Donaghy Shield final. In the final, they encountered a very formidable outfit in Fermanagh Colleges. Played in Athlone, this game produced some great football and some outstanding performances throughout. At the final whistle, the St. Patrick's/Tipperary Institute combination proved the stronger, winning a very close encounter by 2 points. Great celebration followed among the team, mentors and followers when team captain Catherine Anderson lifted the Donaghy Shield, capping a great year on the GAA scene in Tipperary Institute and St. Patrick's College.
