Introduction:
Alfred Adler’s Individual Psychology is a dynamic, holistic and insightful model that regards people as ‘human becomings’. Adlerian psychology is an exciting and useful way to better understand people and their particular paths through life. It believes that each human being is a unity of mind, body and spirit, and therefore unique.
Individual psychology is valuable in many fields of human interaction, such as teaching, coaching, community development, group work (team building, group roles and dynamics), consultancy, management (leadership style, organisational change) and personality analysis (career planning, life planning). The Adlerian model is a systematic approach to working with individuals, families and other groups on improving the quality of their emotional lives.
Programme Aims:
To provide students with a workable understanding of Individual Psychology.
To provide students will effective interpersonal skills.
To provide students with the necessary knowledge and skills to function as change agents in different settings.
To provide students with opportunities to change and grow themselves.
Programme Structure:
This is a 20 day programme leading to an Advanced Certificate in Adlerian Psychology and Counselling Skills. It covers the basics of Adlerian Psychology and Counselling Skills.
The programme will be delivered 1 day per week from September 2010 until May 2011.
Assessment will be by a variety of continuous assessment methods. Much of the teaching/learning on this programme will be experiential, i.e. working in small groups and getting feedback. Personal growth work is intrinsic to the programme.

Egan’s Counselling Model |
Practising a structured form of counselling and applying Egan’s 3 stage model to a real life problem. |
Summary of Lifestyle Information |
Coordinating all information from module 1 and 2 in order to carry out a Lifestyle Assessment on ourselves. |
Lifestyle Assessment |
Completing a lifestyle assessment on ourselves and gaining information on our personalities, priorities, goals and private logic. |
Further Counselling Skills |
More practical exercises enhancing counselling skills such as empathy and active listening. |

Application of Adler’s 4 stages of counselling. Including some of Adler’s methods for working with different issues. |

Exploring the role of emotions and behaviour in understanding why we act the way we do. |

Experiential exploration of Adler’s 4 priorities (Pleasing, Superiority, Avoiding and Control) applied to participants own personality. |
Life Tasks |
We explore Adler’s 3 life tasks of Intimacy, Social and Work and understand their importance in our lives. |
Encouragement |
Learn the importance of encouragement in Adlerian psychology. |
Empathy |
Applied exercises to help develop and deepen empathy. |

Is this programme for you?
The programme is aimed at anyone 23 years or over who is interacting with people and who wishes to improve his/her communication/counselling skills and how he/she relates to people. The Adlerian approach to working with people believes in the possibility of change, and that what we need to make these changes in our lives is courage.
The programme will be of particular usefulness to the following: Teachers (classroom, learning support, resource and guidance counsellors and home/school liaison), health board workers, social workers, nurses, community development personnel, childcare workers, parents, HR personnel, managers, and interested individuals.
This Advanced Certificate is for anyone who would like to improve the quality of his/her own lives and how he/she interacts with others.
Entry Requirements:
Selection for the programme will be by written application and interview.
Award:
On successful completion of the programme, graduates will be awarded an Advanced Certificate in Adlerian Psychology and Counselling Skills by Tipperary Institute. This programme is offered at NQF (National Qualifications Framework) Level 6 and carries 20 ECTS*.
*ECTS is the abbreviation used for the European Credit Transfer System. Each module is given a value between 1 and 60 to describe the amount of work required to complete it.
Programme Fee:
The programme fee is €1250.
FÁS funding may be available for this programme.
