Course Aims:
This is an innovative new course, designed to provide participants with the skills to use their computer to complete everyday tasks and to allow them to become part of the technology world that we now live in. The course addresses a range of everyday computing tasks, such as booking flights online, buying books, CDs, tickets etc. online, sending and receiving email, downloading photographs from a digital camera and managing them on your computer.
This course is aimed at complete beginners, people who would like to be able to buy books online, pay bills online, search the Internet, etc. A unique aspect to this course is that it will be completely learner focused. The topics covered during the course will be determined by what the participants themselves are interested in. At the end of the course, the participants will be better placed to use the computer for everyday tasks.
Course Objectives:
The objectives of each course are tailored to meet the requirements of each individual group therefore the objectives may vary, but are likely to include some or all of the following:
Understand and be able to use the basic features of a personal computer such as create and store files and documents, use accessories – calculator, notepad etc, play games, play a CD or DVD on your computer;
Set up an email account, send and receive email, open attachments and attach files to an email;
Search the internet, browsing commonly used websites, booking tickets, buying books online, etc;
Basic word processing using Microsoft Office;
Download music from iTunes, etc.
Manage photos from your digital camera;
Understand basic security requirements such as safety on the internet, backing up files, virus protection.
Course Structure:
The course is offered on a part-time basis, with classes scheduled for 2 hours per week, for 10 weeks commencing in early October.
Classes will be held in computer labs and each participant will have access to a computer for the duration of the class.
The class will be very practical and will focus entirely on experiential learning. There is no examination component to this course.
Entry Requirements:
There are no formal entry requirements; however, students should be motivated to improve their computer skills and it is an advantage to have access to a computer outside of class.
